Author's Note: This was an assignment I wrote for my creative writing class :D
Many people wonder how school was started, especially the students who have to go to school. Many people have different ideas, others think it was always there. Now the true origin of school will be explained. Long, long ago, before there were adults in the world and gods and goddesses lived with people, there were only children. Maya, the Great Mother Goddess, made it so. She believed that the carefree nature of children was more pleasing than the down to earth, serious nature of adults. Many of the other gods and goddesses agreed with her, like the God of Tracking, Scouter, or Ping, Goddess of Laughter.
But Hunter, the God of All Things Annoying, hated them. They made it so much harder to cause chaos with the cheery nothing-is-the-matter nature of children to always make right all of his tricks and pranks. But one day, Hunter came up with his worst scheme ever. It would make both children and gods alike miserable. All he needed was to find a way to get it started.
So he went to Maya, with all the details worked out in his head. Oh Great Mother of us all, the trickster began in his best attempt of an earnest voice. Your most wonderful creations, the children, are going to waste! They spend all their time playing and singing. They might enjoy this now, but if a time should come when we can no longer do everything for them, they will not be able to care for themselves. They need some teachings!
Gravely, the wise Maya eyed Hunter. She knew all about Hunter, and his tendency of causing trouble, but what he said made sense. She knew she would have to let the children grow to adulthood someday, and that they would need some way to take care of themselves. What do you suggest, Hunter? she asked.
We should make a place just for learning, and call it a School, Hunter explained, voicing the name of his most awful creation yet. Carefully containing his glee that Maya herself was falling for his plan and keeping his voice concerned, he continued. The children would come to the School everyday and learn different skills they need for the future. The minor gods and goddesses would do the teaching, and the children would get the precious knowledge that they so desperately need.
So Maya agreed to the plan, unaware that Hunter was celebrating his greatest trick yet. Not only would the important Deities not be able to be ever comforted by the children, but the minor gods with time to spare would no longer be able to spend their free time doing whatever they wanted, as they would have the eternally dull job of teaching hyper children. And more! The children would be in School all day, having to stay in one place all day, learning. Everyone would be miserable!
Maya gathered all of her gods, goddesses and children together and told them all that Hunter had explained to her. They all had mixed emotions about it. Some didnt like it, but understood the importance of it all, others wished there was some other way of teaching and tried desperately to think of some better way, and others (mainly the children themselves,) were just plain opposed to the idea. One little girl, Aeris, was even in tears.
When the murmurs died down, Maya started to assign the teachers their jobs. Both Scouter and Ping were appointed teachers, along with Pings good friend Poppy, Goddess of Laughter, and many more. Hunter just stood in the back, congratulating himself, when something he hadnt counted on happened.
And the most important position of all, Maya announced, that of Principal, will go to the one whose wonderful idea this was. Hunter shall be in charge of the school.
Now it was Hunters turn to be aghast. No! Not him! The job of Principal was the worst, most boring job of all! He would have to be at school longer than anyone, planning everything done by those awful children! But of course he couldnt say anything and ruin his best work ever! So Hunter, keeping his face neutral, nodded. He would have to make the best of the situation. He would later end up using his position of power to invent his worst scheme ever, Homework, which ended up being his true downfall, but at the time it was the most horrid moment of his life. And that was how, thanks to the god Hunter, school was started. As the children gradually grew to be adults, the gods and goddesses no longer needed to be the teacher, as the adults who wished could now take over that job. School eventually evolved in different ways, and gradually became even pleasing to some children and teachers alike. There will always be those who oppose it, and they will still be mainly the children themselves, but school will always be here. Maya saw the use of it, and made it so it could never be eliminated. So that was how school came to be.
